Here is my new favorite thing. Collagen Hydrolysate (Green Can) from Great Lakes Gelatin.

I have known about the collagen benefits of bone broth for a long time. I have also been trying to make my own bone broth for a long time. I do make it but not often so I never have it when I need it and I certainly don’t have it on a regular basis. It was a bummer but I mostly just tried not to think about it.

A while ago I found some information about Great Lakes Gelatin (Red Can). I was very excited, I could get the gelatin/collagen that I needed “on demand” just by adding it to my food and drinks. The reviews said that it dissolved, even in cold water. I had read that you could just take a teaspoon, up to a tablespoon in your mouth and then wash it down with water. That did NOT go well. I had to peel it off the roof of my mouth, really gross. I decided I would try it in water (I was determined), again, did not go well, big gelatinous clump in my drink. Blah. I figured it wasn’t a total loss, I could mix it into smoothies. I actually haven’t tried that yet. I did just read a recipe for sweet & sour gummies, you know, like sour patch kids. You make them with the Great Lakes Gelatin (Red Can). I’m going to try that today. I’ll let you know how that goes. Gummy candy that is health promoting! My son won’t know what hit him, hee hee.

O.k., so on to my NEW FAVORITE STUFF. Green can, Great Lakes Gelatin, Collagen Hydrolysate. This stuff does dissolve. Evidently, the fact that it has been hydrolyzed (broken down into its component amino acids) makes it easy to dissolve.

All good stuff. I would like to add that I really wanted to take this stuff in hopes of helping my skin. My skin is fine but I am getting older and I am noticing that the skin on my legs is getting a big “crepey” (tmi?). I’m hoping to see some “skin tissue” benefits. We’ll see, it took a long time to wear my skin out so I suspect it will take a while to notice any improvement. Also, I think I’m asking a lot. Fingers are crossed.

Here’s the good stuff and the reason I decided to write this post even though it’s too soon to notice any skin transformation. Aches and pains. I decided to go back and re-read reviews of this product to see if anyone mentioned anything about skin. No one did. They did mention that their finger nails were growing like crazy. That’s good I guess. What everyone was talking about was the fact that their aches and pains were gone. Even arthritis pain, diminished or in some cases actually gone. This is when I stopped thinking about my skin and started thinking about aches and pains. The big joint on the ring finger of my left hand has been bothering me for about 2 years. So badly that I have stopped wearing my wedding rings. It hurt to bend, it hurt to the touch. It’s was just weird, it’s the only joint that bothered me but believe me it was enough. You may have noticed that I wrote that last sentence past-tense. It’s gone! Nothing. No pain. I don’t know if the collagen did this, all I know is, it’s gone. I’ll continue to monitor this, but hopefully I’ll forget to monitor because I just won’t think about it. That would be so great!

The other win-win here is that I have started to drink green tea. I don’t typically like hot beverages but after the nasty fiasco with the “red can” not dissolving I decided I’d give the “green can” a little help and at least use hot water. Turns out I really like green tea. I have a caffeinated lemon, ginger green tea in the morning (I could do without the caffeine so I’m on the look out for some lemon/ginger decaf) and then a decaffeinated green tea at night. I have only had the green tea at night once, that was last night. I haven’t been sleeping well. Last night I had the best nights sleep. Again, not sure it was the hot tea/collagen potion but I’m sure going to try it again tonight.

Oh, one more thing, the products from Great Lakes Gelatin are gluten free, no MSG, kosher certified, and from grass-fed cows.

    I’m looking forward to checking out the green can. Thanks for the info! I’m using the red can now and you are completely right, it isn’t intuitive at all. What I’ve finally found works best for me is to put 1 tbsp of the powder in a small ramekin, then pour in about 1-2 oz of cool water as I stir with a fork. It mixes in completely and I add that concoction to a big mug of piping hot tea. When I try to add the powder to a dish of water (vs water into a dish of powder) it just clumps, even if I am stirring, so there appears to be some magic in the method πŸ˜‰ One extra dirty dish, though.

    You are going to love the Green Can! It’s so easy. I recently read an article about the difference between the Red and Green cans, here is a link to the article:

    There was a note at the end of the article about using too much too soon causing digestive issues. The suggestion is to start with 1/2 – 1 tablespoon per day. I use 1 tablespoon in my tea. I usually only have tea once a day but sometimes in the morning and evening. No digestive issues. The article says you can add more every two weeks, up to 6 tablespoons/day as tolerated.

    In my coffee.. I am up to about
    2TBSP. A day.. I love this stuff.
    My nails are atrong and grow great!
    My hair also
    And i have a lot less problems with
    My knees when i work out!
    And my neck issues ..

    I just wanted to comment on the green can that I have. I read so many reviews how the powder dissolves in cold water easily and is tasteless but I am finding that neither is true. When I try to dissolve it in cold water, it clumps up into goo but it does dissolve in hot water very easily. There is also a noticeable taste and smell that I have to mix it with strong juice and chug it down. I tried mixing it in tea but the taste was too noticeable for me. I wonder why mine is having such a hard time dissolving in cold water..

      Hi Elizabeth,
      I never did try and dissolve it in a glass of water. I alway(s) use it in a smoothie or a hot drink. It’s possible it did try it in cold water and didn’t have great results. I really can’t remember but I don’t think so. I like to add it to smoothies that I mix with a blender. I never noticed a taste. The smoothie would surely cover any weird taste and when I put it in a hot drink it was tea and I never noticed a weird taste that way either. Sorry I’m not much help on the “clumping”. You could always call the people at Great Lakes and ask them. I’d be curious what they would have to say, especially about the weird taste.

        I have been mixing the green can with hot tea every day and absolutely love it. I have not tried mixing it with plain water but did try to mix it with Dark Chocolate Almond Milk once. It did NOT go well and there were little globs of gooey product floating throughout it. Yuck!

          The best way I have found to mix it is with a shaker bottle. Take the metal ball out, make sure the shaker bottle is 110% dry, put in your collagen powder and another protein powder or something for the taste, pour the water and then mix/drink VERY quickly.

      Hi Elizabeth.
      About the clumping. I’m guessing you added water to the powder? That happened to me the first time as well, kinda looked like egg drop soup. What you need to do is add the powder to the water, stirring the water as you do. I can use cold water out of the fridge doing this.

      I also use a green can and have no problems in dissolving the powder in cold water.
      No clumps, no goo or taste.
      I dissolve it in Vit C 1000mg. Apparently taking VIT C in conjunction with Collagen helps body to absorb more collagen.

      Liz you are right on both counts. I to have the green can and still waiting for the benefits to show up.
      I mix it in a little hot water then fill the glass with cranberry juice and drink it down.

      Put a couple of tablespoons from the green can in your coffee. It doesn’t clump at all and there’s no taste. Works great.

    I tried this today in my green smoothie which is my breakfast and lunch. I really didn’t think it would be a problem since I routinely use eight cups of kale/chard/spinach in my morning fruit smoothie and can tolerate the taste alright. This was not a good combo. I had to keep adding things to make it taste better. I am still trying to chug it down now, and convincing myself one thought at a time that I can do this all afternoon. I think I will try the hot tea tomorrow.

    • I have had no issue in adding it to my green smoothie, which I also add frozen pineapple and blueberries for anti inflammatory benefits. I can’t taste a change nor do I notice a texture difference. I think to dissolve in cold liquids they need to be very cold.

    I have been using the green can for about six months now, I love the way my nails look , I have never had strong meals for long nails till now and my hair grows faster… Every morning and late afternoon I add it to my water, I love it! I find myself checking out my nails all the time now!I can’t get over that I now have long nails!!!

    Wanted say I use two healthy scoops with a packet of emergenC every morning – stir while adding water…no clumps.
    Also, for anyone who has had issues – I’ve been using for a couple of years & once got a ‘bad’ batch. It was darker in color & smelled horrendous…it was difficult to get down, even with the emergenC packet. But, that was a one time issue…, give it another try if you got a bum batch.

  14. I have a disease called RSD causes severe pain bone loss, muscle wasting, skin changes, nail changes and blood flow issues so I’ve been researching this for awhile. I read that to get the best benefits you need to add VitMin C and hyaluronic acid supplements. From what I gather it makes it more complete. Amazon sells a brand called NOW that was recommended by several different sites.

    I have used the green can for the past year and I can’t live without it. I throw 2-3 scoops into my daily smoothie. I usually add it to a half banana, 1/4 cup frozen blueberries, a few grapes, handful of spinach, coconut water and a little honey. About two years I began getting deep laugh lines around my mouth but they completely went away after three months of taking their collagen daily. It’s also a great appetite suppressant. Love love love that stuff.

    I’ve been using this for the past year though not consistently (shame on me). Here’s some things I notice: Works well in warm soups and smoothies. It does make the consistency of the smoothie thinner and tends to make the ice separate from the other ingredients somewhat. Overall, the benefits are worth it. I have a question. Can it be used successfully in baking? I would like to add it to custard to boost the protein content, but I’m wondering if it would prevent the custard mixture from “setting up”. Does anyone have experience with it in baked goods?

      Gelatine (red tub) is the one you want to use for baking and the Collagen hydrolysate (green tub) for almost everything else.

      So glad you like it. It’s great stuff. You can include it in your diet daily. I think 2 tablespoons is a good amount. Often it’s best to work your way up to 2 tablespoons to avoid any potential GI upset. It’s really great for your skin, hair and nails.

    Ive discovered a new form of Collagen Hydrolysate like the Great Lakes Green tub that is made from fish instead of beef. Some argue that it has superior absorption and less health risks. It also has added Vitamin C and Hyaluronic acid. It is called California Gold Nutrition, CollagenUP 5000 and is sold on iherb. It’s a similar price to Great Lakes but they also sell a smaller tub.

    Every evening I put a heaping tbsp in a 6 oz of cool water and mix it with a small wire whip it dissolves within one minute, then I just chug it down. I don’t love the taste but I just consider it medication, once it’s down there is no after taste or side-effects. it seems to be helping me fall asleep quicker.
