Exercise. Just do it.
I’m usually pretty good about getting to the gym but lately I’ve been really busy with school and haven’t moved my fanny away from my computer for weeks. A funny thing happens when I don’t get to the gym. I begin to feel unworthy. Like I have no right to drag my sorry butt through the gym doors. It’s been too long, all is lost. If I go to the gym I will only confirm my suspicion that I’m a blob. I feel sure that I will be confronted with the evidence that I have lost all muscle mass and stamina. All of that negative, doomsdayesque thinking just creates more fear of “starting over”. Sure enough, not going to the gym for yet another day seems like a pretty good idea.
So, this morning I went to the gym. Really, I think it’s been at least 3 weeks. That may not seem long to some of you but to me it’s an eternity. I almost didn’t go this morning. My husband was going and asked if I was planning to join him. For the first time in my life I almost said no. I’m really not sure why I didn’t. It was on the tip of my tongue. For some unknown reason, I got changed and went to the gym. My plan was to just move around a little until my husband was done with his 30 minute run. I figured I could do that without humiliating myself too much (not sure who I think is noticing my presence at the gym!?).
As it turns out, I can’t just “dog it”. Walking through the doors was the hard part. My little “fake” workout turned into a full blow regular workout after the first 10 minutes. This always happens. Why can’t I remember this when I’m having a hard time convincing myself to go to the gym.
Note to self:
Plan to workout for 10 minutes. Nothing strenuous, just plan to move for 10 minutes. More often than not 10 minutes will turn into a good 20 or even 30 minute workout.
Moving for 10 minutes is an achievable goal. If I only move for 10 minutes I have achieved my goal and have nothing to feel badly about. If that 10 minutes turns into 20 or 30 – I rock! It’s all good.
Your body remembers everything. Even if you haven’t workout for a while you aren’t starting from zero. Just do it. You will feel better.
Thanks Jeff! I’m glad you were going to the gym this morning.
Simplify. Feel Good.
